If Japan ever had a wild west, it was Hokkaido. Oh, all the classic movie stuff of samurai bashing each other with swords never made it this far north, but the image of the West—open spaces, places to disappear, actual land horizons (which no other island in Japan has)—lingers.

Day 28: Kushiro, Japan

Kurshio is known for the large Kushiro Marsh, home to deer, sea eagles, Japanese cranes & more native wildlife. A circular trail runs through the marsh from the Kushiro Marsh Observatory, where you can explore this natural wonder. If yo have time see Fisherman’s Wharf, it is home to restaurants & the glass-covered EGG Garden. Other great spots to vist while you're here are the nearby, Hokkaido Kushiro Art Museum that displays works, by local artists.

Day 34: Kodiak, Alaska

Kodiak is all about bears. And what bears! This unique subspecies named for the Kodiak Archipelago where they are found evolved in isolation for around 12,000 years. Head down Cannery Row to learn about the fishing industry in Kodiak, with an introduction to this quaint, working Alaska city. Visit the Russian Orthodox Church where the priest or a member of the clergy will talk about the Russian church and the historic role it has played in Alaska. At the Fisherman's Church, the Balilaka Players, a local band, perform traditional Russian music. As you listen to their music, enjoy Russian tea and treats such as borsch, Russian tea cakes and piroshi. Take a scenic drive past the largest Coast Guard Base in the United States and visit the Bear Town Market in the downtown area before returning to the ship. This is your chance to buy a locally made gift or postcard and view the work of Kodiak artists.

Day 35: Anchorage, Alaska

Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city, is known for its cultural sites, including the Alaska Native Heritage Center, which displays traditional crafts, stages dances, and presents replicas of dwellings from its native groups. The city is also a gateway to nearby wilderness areas and picturesque mountain ranges.

Day 36: College Fjord (Scenic Cruising)

College Fjord is located in the northern sector of Prince William Sound in the U.S. state of Alaska. The fjord contains five tidewater glaciers, five large valley glaciers, and dozens of smaller glaciers, most named after renowned East Coast colleges.

Day 37: Hubbard Glacier (Cruising)

With its dramatic and vast 7-mile-wide face, and ever-changing wall of ice, the Hubbard Glacier is a guaranteed bucket list item that will be etched in to the mind of every Alaskan visitor.

Day 38: Sitka, Alaska

Located on the Alaskan island of Baranof, Sitka was once the capital of Russian America. Discover the city’s history, go on a fishing trip, or visit the Raptor Centre to see where injured eagles and other wild birds are rehabilitated and eventually released into the wild.

Day 39: Skagway, Alaska

Gold was discovered nearby in 1896, causing Skagway to grow quickly. You can see gold rush era buildings preserved in the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. Another activity from this period, the Yukon Route Rail Road will take you on a vintage locomotive tour of the area with fantastic views out over the mountains.

Day 40: Juneau, Alaska

The only state capital in the USA that can only be reached by boat or seaplane. With no road access and its extreme remote location, the wildlife and wilderness in Juneau are second to none! Go sea kayaking, pan for gold, visit a salmon hatchery, or take a whale watching trip. Don’t miss the Mendenhall Glacier and a glimpse back to the ice-age!

Day 41: Ketchikan, Alaska

Today’s adventure brings us to Ketchikan, another fascinating location on the Alaskan coast. Visit a Native American village, watch a lumberjack show, take a trip to the Misty Fjords or go crab fishing!

Day 42: Inside Passage, Alaska (Cruising)

Enjoy the breathtaking scenery as you make your way towards Vancouver back down the inside passage. Camera at the ready for the stunning waterfalls, thick green forests and glaciers emerging from the mountainsides.

Monterey is a city on California’s rugged central coast. Visit the famous Cannery Row, immortalized by novelist John Steinbeck. Also famous is Monterey Bay Aquarium, with thousands of marine animals and plants on display in underwater and interactive exhibits.

Day 53: Santa Barbara, United States

With the Santa Ynez Mountains as a dramatic backdrop. Downtown, Mediterranean-style white stucco buildings with red-tile roofs reflect the city’s Spanish colonial heritage. Upscale boutiques and restaurants offering local wines and seasonal fare line State Street.

Day 54: San Diego, California

Immense Balboa Park is the site of the renowned San Diego Zoo, as well as numerous art galleries, artist studios, museums and gardens. A deep harbour is home to a large active naval fleet, with the USS Midway, an aircraft-carrier-turned-museum, open to the public.
