The vast Colón Free Trade Zone offers tax-free shopping. Just west of the city, at the mouth of the Chagres River, Fort San Lorenzo is a well-preserved colonial military structure.Day 19: Panama Canal, Panama
Known as the world’s biggest short cut, the Panama Canal joins the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. Started by the French and completed by the USA on Panama’s land, the 48-mile canal was opened just over 100 years ago in 1914. Since then over 1-million ships have used the short cut.
