The rest of the day is free to explore the colourful souks and markets found in the town or watch the sunset over the River Nile from your ship’s deck.
Optional Tour: Drive to the spectacular temples to Ramses II, carved into the rocky hillside at Abu Simbel. These temples were completely dismantled and rebuilt when Lake Nasser was flooded. Twice a year (22 Feb & 22 Oct), at the time of Ramses II ascension to the throne, the rising sun shines in through the entrance corridor of the temple and lights up two of the statues in the central chamber (Ra, the sun god, and Amun, the king of the gods). The statue of Ptah, the god of darkness, remains in shadow.
