Head out into the city to explore during your complementary pre-cruise stay in Istanbul, included as part of your cruise package with My Cruises. Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site Sultanahmet, Istanbul’s historic district, or the magnificent Topkapi Palace which was the home of the Ottoman sultans for almost 400 years. After two days seeing the wonderful sights of Istanbul board the Island Sky ready for your expedition cruise through the Black Sea. Sailing on the first afternoon will take you down the picturesque Bosporus Strait which divides the continents of Europe and Asia.
For over a thousand years’ traders passed through Safranbolu on their way from east to west along the Silk Road. A popular stopover for the travellers and their caravans, the city grew steadily during the time of the Ottoman Empire and has now been certified a UNESCO World Heritage Site to preserve the immaculate historical architecture. A short journey from Bartin Port, our stop for the day, make sure to visit Safranbolu’s marketplace, mosque and 16th century Turkish Hammam.
Founded in 800 BC Sinop boasts a wealth of ancient buildings and interesting historical tales. The Fortified city was an ideal place for settlers due to the natural harbour, which has seen many battles, including the attack of 1853 by the Russian Navy. This attack was said to have been one of the events leading to the Crimean War. Sights here include the Alaettin Mosque, the Roman Temple, and the Cezayirli Ali Pasha Mosque.
Day 4 of your Black Sea expedition cruise will be spent exploring the 13th century Sumela Monastery. A short drive through the lush green forests and mountains of Trazbon brings you to this magnificent cliff top building with amazing views out over the valley. Afterwards, enjoy an afternoon in the modern city of Trabzon, before boarding the Island Sky to sail to your next destination.
Welcome to Georgia!! Spend the morning exploring the charming port of Batumi. Visit the colourful farmers market and take a relaxing walk through the lovely Botanical Gardens. Join the Zegrahm expedition cruise team after lunch to visit the 2,000-year-old Gonio Fortress, followed by dinner at a local restaurant in Batumi which will include regional delicacies, Georgian wines and fantastic performances of traditional music and energetic dances. The Island Sky docks in Russia for day six of your Black Sea Cruise! Host of the 2014 Winter Olympics, Sochi is known as the Russian Riviera, and is a popular beach resort in the summer months. Join the Zegrahm cruise team to explore the town, finishing with a tour of Stalin’s Dacha (villa), hidden deep in the trees at the edge of Sochi.
Day seven of your Black Sea cruise will be spent at sea. Enjoy your time aboard the Island Sky with a long leisurely lunch or a lecture from one of the expeditions on board speakers. Experts on your voyage include Art Historian Allan Langdale, Marine Archaeologist Susan Langley and Wildlife Author Jim Wilson.
The Highlights of today’s stop in Odessa are the Opera House, the archaeological museum and Gagarin’s Palace. You enter the city via the Potemkin Steps, built in 1837 there are 192 steps altogether. You can walk up the steps, or admire them from the bottom and then take the funicular to the top if you prefer.
The next two days of your cruise holiday will be spent exploring the Danube, Europe’s second longest river. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site there is a lot to see along this stretch of water. Join the Zegrahm expedition crew for a walking tour of the small port of Tulcea, visit the Danube Canal Museum and the Danube Ecologic Museum. On the second day cruising the Danube you can choose to explore the wetlands aboard a small local boat and see the hundreds of species of birds that call them home. On board, sample local vodka and Romanian snacks.
Histria, an ancient trading centre is Romania’s oldest city. Buried under years of sand and earth it was re-discovered in 1914 and is in the process of being excavated. Join the Island Sky expedition leaders to explore the oceanfront ruins and spot birds in the wetlands. Followed by a trip to the Constanta Archaeological Museum which houses one of the largest Roman Mosaic floors in Europe. Back on board the ship you will enjoy wine tasting and local entertainment while cruising towards Bulgaria.
Once part of the ancient Greek Empire, Varna is now a modern port city in Bulgaria. Discover the largest Roman ruins in Bulgaria, the 2nd century Roman Thermae (baths) with the expedition cruise team. Then on to the Varna Archaeological Museum to see the world’s oldest worked gold and other artefacts which chronologically trace the progress of human society in this area.
You have now come to the end of your luxury small ship cruise. Disembark in Istanbul and make sure to sample some more local specialities including Turkish coffee, and Turkish delight before heading home.
