Grand Volcanic Vistas & Iberian Coasts Intinerary

Welcome to the Canary Islands! This Spanish Archipelago created by volcanic activity is only 100km off the coast of Africa, and enjoys warm weather all year round. Tenerife is the largest of the seven main islands, with lots of natural and historical sights to see. Jump aboard the Minerva, ready for your Swan Hellenic boutique cruise, first stop Gran Canaria.
The first stop on your luxury small ship cruise is Gran Canaria. This island is less than 50 kilometres across but has the landscape of a small continent, dry arid deserts, lush green bushland, imposing mountains and long sandy beaches. Join the Swan Hellenic crew for a tour of the Las Palmas Botanical Garden, the Basilica of Teror, or hike the Caldera de Bandama and the Maspalomas sand dunes.
Today’s complimentary excursion, included as part of your cruise package, takes you to Tefia. Here you can learn about the history of the island at La Alcogida, the eco museum.
With a full day in Lanzarote on your Iberian Cruise you will have time to get to know the island and its magnificent landscapes. The Minerva’s crew will give you a tour of the island’s capital Arrecife, the popular beach town of Costa Teguise and the Timanfaya National Park. The park houses the Montanas del Fuego (Fire Mountains), which were created in the 1700’s by over 100 volcanoes that erupted to create the landscape we see today. Take a guided walking tour or enjoy local Canarian food cooked by the geothermal heat from the ground, which reaches between 400-600 °C just below the surface.
As the Minerva sails to Madeira take advantage of the facilities and complimentary entertainment aboard the luxury cruise ship. Accommodating just 350 passengers, there is plenty of space to enjoy the swimming pool, sun deck or lounge areas. Attend lectures by guest speaker Dr Peter Cattermole, an expert in volcanoes on this planet and on Mars.
Welcome to the Portuguese island of Madeira! The cruise port is right in the middle of Funchal, the islands capital, so you can easily explore on your own, or join the cruise team for the complimentary excursions and guided tours. Over the next few days explore the Botanical Gardens, take in the view from the top of the Funchal Cable Car, and visit Eira do Serrado the breathtaking mountainous area of Madeira.
La Palma is said to be the most beautiful of the Canary Islands. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Biosphere Reserve protecting its unique coastal and marine environment, the island has also earned a Starlight Award for clear dark skies, perfect for stargazing. The Swan Hellenic cruise team will accompany you on a tour of the Roque de los Muchachos, a scientific observatory housing some of the most advanced telescopes in the world. See inside a telescope and learn about the work they do at the centre. On day two of your on shore adventures in La Palma take a walking tour of Santa Cruze, the picturesque island capital.
Often referred to as the Canary Island time forgot, La Gomera offers spectacular scenery with its craggy rugged cliff faces and fine black sand beaches. Join the shore excursion to La Gomera Valle Gran Rey, a popular beach spot on the island.
Join the Swan Hellenic crew to celebrate as the Minerva makes her maiden call at El Hierro today! The highlight of today’s stop is the Volcanoes of El Hierro Tour, visit the active volcanoes and take in the fantastic views along the drive through the Canary Islands smallest island.
Back in Tenerife explore Mount Teide, the Canaries highest volcano, and also the highest point in Spain. With an overnight stop here you will have plenty of time to explore and experience the nightlife. Make sure to try some of the local Honey Rum, a popular Canary Islands made tipple.
Happy Valentine’s Day! Spend the next two days at sea, reading on deck, having a relaxing massage and listening to guest speaker Rear Admiral John Lippiett talk about maritime history, exploration and his experiences in the Falklands War.
Welcome to Gibraltar, a British territory on Spain’s south coast, and popular European holiday destination. Take a walk around town and pick up some duty free goodies from well-known UK and international brands. Buy perfume, jewellery, electronics and fashion, all 20% cheaper than in the UK. Watch a local glass blowing demonstration at the Gibraltar Crystal workshop, enjoy a drink in a traditional English pub, or venture up to the Rock of Gibraltar to visit the islands trouble making inhabitants, the Barbary Macaque Apes. Gibraltar is the only place in Europe where these primates can be found, and legend has it that as long as the monkeys continue to live on the Rock of Gibraltar, it will remain under British rule.
Cadiz has a long fascinating history going back over 3,000 years. An important Roman port, the starting point for Christopher Columbus’s second voyage to America, and the location of the famous Battle of Trafalgar. This small peninsular almost completely surrounded by water has a lot of stories to tell. Join the crew of the Minerva for a walking tour of Cadiz, for a Trafalgar Battle tour, or a trip to Jerez, well-known for its Spanish Sherry production.
With a long stop in port today you will have lots of time to explore. Join the Minerva cruise team for a tour of the Magna Hispalensis, the third largest church in the world. Or Perhaps venture further afield to Cordoba, one of Spain’s oldest cities.
Relax at sea today after your busy day discovering Seville. Have a long lunch, enjoy a drink in the Wheeler Bar, or take an afternoon siesta on deck, you are in Spain after all!
Welcome to Portugal! Lisbon, Portugal’s capital city is set out over seven hills, and has a picture perfect landscape featuring pastel-coloured buildings with the deep blue backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean. There is a lot to see in Lisbon, from lavish architecture and art bought back from Brazil during the colonial era, to modern day master pieces in the Berardo Museum, including the works of Dali, Andy Warhol and Picasso. Make sure to taste some local Port while ashore!
Green fingered passengers will not want to miss lectures from guest speaker Professor Stefan Buczacki, scientist, naturalist and author, he has published more than 60 books on gardening and natural history. Enjoy a relaxing day at sea before the next stop on your Iberian cruise.
Join the Swan Hellenic cruise team today for one of two tours, choose a city tour of La Coruna or visit Cathedral de Santiago de Compostela which is said to house the body of apostle St James, and is the finishing point of medieval pilgrimage route Camino de Santiago.
The last part of your Swan Hellenic boutique cruise will be spent sailing through the Bay of Biscay and the English Channel. Enjoy one last formal dinner at the Swan Restaurant before arriving in the UK.
You have come to the end of your luxury cruise aboard the Swan Hellenic Minerva. Ask your My Cruises consultant about adding extras to your cruise deal such as a stopover in England or a European city break before flying back to Australia.
