My Cruises

In Shackleton’s Footsteps Cruise Itinerary

Welcome to Ushuaia where you will meet Polar Pioneer in the afternoon and cruise along Beagle Channel on your way to the stunning scenery of Antarctica.
Crossing through Drake Passage will give you your first glimpse in to the stunning widlife of the region including giant petrels and native albatross species. Your on board historian will introduce to the tours namesake, Sir Ernest Shackleton and prepare you for debarkation in the South Shetland Islands.
Antarctic Sound is where you will make a shore landing on the stunning ice and rock island, Brown Bluff. Once you have had some time on shore, you will continue your journey towards the Weddell Sea. A bold greeting of ever-changing pack ice and towering icebergs really enforce the treacherous journey that Shackleton faced and ultimately lost. If the ice conditions are great, you will have the chance to explore world-renowned fossil beds on Seymour, Vega or James Ross islands. Your next location is Elephant Island.
Once you see the extreme conditions this island faces, it is near impossible to comprehend that Shackleton’s crew managed to reach shore with three lifeboats and survived on the island for four gloomy and freezing months. If the conditions allow, you will be able to get close to shore and maybe even explore the famous island.
You’ll learn more about Shackleton’s tale as the days go on and cruise along the rocky shores and ice covered coastlines in this marine life paradise. Keep your eyes peeled (and more importantly your cameras ready) for a range of whales including fin, sei and potentially blue whales.
Once again your itinerary will be dependant on daily conditions but presuming luck is on your side, entrance in to Cave Cove which is situated in King Haakon Bay. You will truly appreciate the skills of Shackleton’s skipper and navigator, Worsely, who navigated them in to the tiny enclave. You’ll then traverse your way to Peggotty Bluff and spot wildlife spectacles including around 500’000 king penguin’s, as well as chinstrap, gentoo and macaroni penguin colonies. The beaches will no doubt be lined with elephant and fur seals.
Once you reach Scotia Sea, you will be joined by a variety of seabirds, whales, dolphins and more animals residing around the Falkland Islands. Now sit back and enjoy a drink with the captain and your new found friends.
You’ll be up for an early breakfast before disembarking Polar Pioneer and catching your complimentary connection and flight to Santiago or Punta Arenas.
